Francis Carmont Calls Lyoto Machida’s Ranking Into Question

Francis Carmont doesn’t feel Lyoto Machida should jump to the front of the line at middleweight even if he defeats Gegard Mousasi Saturday night at UFC Fight Night.

Carmont, who takes on Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the co-main event, has posted a perfect 6-0 UFC record since joining the promotion. He is 22-7 overall and will have Georges St-Pierre instructing him on Saturday.

“I don’t agree with that,” said Carmont, in an interview on MMAjunkie Radio recently, when asked if Machida should be the No. 1 contender with a win. “If he wins, he’ll have two fights in the division and fight for a title. A lot of guys who are next for the title have four, five, six wins.”

Carmont is on an 11-fight win streak dating back to his run on the regional scene. The Tristar Gym fighter understands why Machida, a former UFC light heavyweight champion, would give the promotion a strong contender in terms of name value.

“I understand Machida is a big name,” he said. “I don’t make the decision. It’s the job of the UFC and Joe Silva.”
