Former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez isn’t going anywhere, as UFC officials announced late Sunday night that they had come to terms with the fighter.
Melendez, who’s contract expired after a 2013 win over Diego Sanchez, had come to terms with Bellator MMA on a deal. However, the UFC held a matching clause and invoked it.
“El Nino,” ranked second in the lightweight division, will coach opposite UFC champion Anthony Pettis on The Ultimate Fighter 20, and the two will meet after that – likely late in the year.
The reality series begins filming in May and airs on FOX Sports 1 starting September 10. It will feature an all-female cast, as strawweights compete to become the first-ever UFC female champion in the division.
Melendez will also appear on the next international season of TUF, as it features fighters from Latin America.
