MMAFrenzy’s coverage of UFC 171 rolls along with our recap of the first of three welterweight fights on tonight’s PPV fight card. The bout would see former Bellator MMA middleweight champion Hector Lombard secure a dominant victory over top contender Jake Shields.
Lombard Controls Shields
Hector Lombard continued to impress in the welterweight division with a dominant showing over Jake Shields. The former Bellator champion took away Shields’ clinch game with his dangerous judo and powerful striking. While Lombard hurt Shields multiple times in the first round, he was never able to put him away and seemed to stop going for the finish in the next two rounds.
While Shields threatened a guillotine late, it was too little, too late for the former Strikeforce champion. Lombard has now won two straight since dropping to welterweight, while Shields takes his first welterweight loss since losing to Jake Ellenberger in 2011.
It was over when:
Shields is the most successful when he is able to establish control in the clinch, Lombard’s mix of judo and power prevented Shields from ever being able to establish any offense.
While Joe Rogan did not enjoy Hector Lombard’s performance, it was still an impressive win for the judoka. That said, I agree with Rogan that he is unlikely to get a title shot off this victory. With such a free-for-all in the welterweight division, Lombard could face whomever else is left out of facing tonight’s main event winner.
