UFC Fight Night 40 is finally here, we have you covered from the first prelim fight on Fight Pass to the fourth prelim fight on Fox Sports 2 and then the main card starting at Fox Sports 1. Come out, bring a friend, get something to eat and check out the coverage of this great event.


Flyweight: Chris Cariaso (16-5 MMA, 5-4 UFC) vs. Louis Smolka (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC)

1st RD: They touch gloves, Cariaso with a body kick, but misses. He misses a head kick. Smolka clinches with him and puts him on the fence, Cariaso tries to find a way out, but Smolka has him pinned on the cage. Cariaso with under hooks, he lands a series of knees to the body, but nothing major. Smolka with a knee to the body of his own. They trade knees to the body and legs of each other. Cariaso keeps with his underhooks to keep the inside leverage to prevent the takedown. Smolka goes for a takedown, but stuffed. They continue to battle on the cage and trade knee shots to the body. Herb Dean wants to see some action; Cariaso trades in and gets out of the clinch. They stand, trade jabs, Smolka with a missing head kick. He is looking for something, Cariaso with a leg, punch combination. Cariaso misses an elbow, but stands his ground. Cariaso with underhook clinch, he is pressed up on the cage, Smolka in control as he takes knees to the chest. A minute left in the round, Smolka with several punches to the ribs of Cariaso. Smolka with a missed takedown attempt, he goes for a single leg takedown, but Cariaso stuffs it. Cariaso with a guillotine with 20 seconds left in the round, but can’t get it locked in and we got to the second round with any finish.

2nd RD: Right off the bat Cariaso takes him down, he locks in a rear naked choke, but Smolka fights out of it. Smolka stands over him, trying to look for something. He can’t find a punch and gets in the guard of Cariaso. The crowd boos this one, Smolka with short punches, but nothing damaging while in the guard. Cariaso locks in an armbar, but Smolka fight sout. He grabs his neck, but Cariaso fights out. They clinch with Cariaso on the cage and Smolka raining down punches, they continue to clinch and Cariaso controlling the action with under hooks. Cariaso with a leg trip takedown and gets the half guard of Smolka. He lands a nice body shot and trying to find an opening. 1:20 left in this round, Cariaso stands up and landing punches. He drops down then up, Smolka rolls out and eats a knee to the gut. Cariaso with a leg kick and picking him apart. Smolka with a nice combination, Cariaso with one of his own. Cariaso with a leg kick and they exchange right hands. Smolka with a stepping right hand that lands, Smolka lands a double leg takedown at 30 seconds, Cariaso quickly gets up and they clinch on the fence, Cariaso locks in the ninja choke at the very end, but time runs out.

3rd RD: Here we go final round, Smolka misses a head kick, Cariaso with a wild combination that does not land. Cariaso looking for the kill, Smolka runs at him, but runs into a right jab. He is looking for something, Cariaso with a head kick, but does not hurt Smolka. Cariaso with a leg kick, then combination. Smolka working the body with strikes, Cariaso clinches, but Smolka takes him down, Smolka on top of Cariaso and landing punches. He leans him against the fence, Cariaso looks for a choke, but Smolak gets out and gets in mount. He is on top and landing big elbows. Can he finish? Smolka transition to half guard, Cariaso gets on hsi feet as the fans applaud. They clinch on the fence, Smolka with knees to the body of Cariaso, but Cariaso has control with underhooks. Smolka takes him down, but Cariaso gets right back up at 1:37. They fight out and trade right hands. Cariaso with a series of body kicks, he swings, but misses. Cariaso with a big leg kick that hurts Smolka and drops him , but he gets right back up. One minute remaining, Smolka with a series of combination of Smolka, he is looking for the kill, but Cariaso is landing devastating leg kicks. They clinch on the fence, Cariaso with a takedown with 15 seconds and they clinch on the fence to end.

Decision: Chris Cariaso def. Louis Smolka by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Heavyweight: Soa Palelei (20-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) vs. Ruan Potts (8-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC)

1st RD: Heavyweights lets go! Palelei gets in his odd stance, Pottis with a fake leg kick, he lands one but does not do much damage. Palelei with a double leg takedown, he gets in side control and lands a nice body shot. Potts has him in a choke, Palelei is trying to get out, but can’t. Potts let’s go, but locks it in against and lets go. Palelei in guard, he presses him on the cage, Pottis with hammer fists from the guard. Palelei with body shots as he transitions. Potts goes for an armbar, but can’t lock it in. Palelei fights out and is in side control. Palelei with a knee to the gut and gets to mount. He lands one hard left hook to the head shot and knocks him out from the mount. Good God!

Welterweight: Neil Magny (9-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) vs. Tim Means (20-5-1 MMA, 2-2 UFC)

1st RD: Magny with in and out fakes, he circles the cage and Means tries to find something. Magny walks around, he lands a leg kick and so does Means. Magny with another one, Means closes the distances; he lands a nice leg, a strike combination. Means with a nice elbow to the face of Magny. He lands a nice leg kick, straight right combo. Means with a miss left jab. A real feeling out process, Means backs him into the cage, but Magny gets out. Means with a front kick and Magny answers with one of his own. Magny goes for an elbow, but misses. Means with a knee to the gut, but Magny clinches and presses him on the cage. Means with a knee and gets out. They stand straight up, Means with a kick, but Magny catches and goes for a takedown. Means gets up and they clinch. Magny with a takedown and ground and pounds from half guard. Does not last and they are on their feet. Magny with a body shot, Means misses with a spinning elbow. Magny with a nice striking combo, but picking Means apart. Means with a spinning elbow that lands, Magny backs away with a body kick. Magny nails with a left hand, Means falls, but goes right to the cage. Magny attempts a takedown while he has Means on the cage, Means with elbows, but does not damage to end the round.

2nd RD: Means with left and right, but does not connect. Magny with a leg kick, Means with a flying knee to the face, but does not land. Means swinging, but can’t connect. Magny is all over the place, Means with a nice elbow to the face that connects. Magny misses a spinning kick and Means hits a head kick. Means with a body kick, finding his groove? Under three minutes, Magny misses a series of strike combos. Means with a fake kick, but holds back. Magny attempts a kick, but caught and Means takes him down. He gets the back of Magny, but gets up and lands right hands to the grounded Magny. He lands a series of knees to the head, but all good. They stand, Magny presses him on the cage, but does not last long. Magny back on the offensive, he nails a body kick, Means misses with a left hook and Magny with a major takedown. Magny presses him on the cage landing short strikes. Magny is looking for another takedown, but nothing. 20 seconds and they break with 10 left.

3rd RD: Means with a leg kick that hurts him, then a flying knee that does not connect. Magny regroups and lands a few punches. Means with an elbow, Magny with a superman punch. Means with a nasty right hook; he lands a knee to the face and hurts Magny. He lands a few strikes, almost finishes Magny, but Magny stands and looks for a leg takedown that spills over to the fence. Means with a choke that makes the two fall to the mat. Magny fights out and presses him on the cage. Means looking for a way out, Magny continues to put the pressure on him. Magny with short jabs, he goes for a takedown and gets it! Magny in side control, then gets his back, Means stands up. However Magny presses him on the cage and Means looks confused. Magny with another takedown and has his back. Magny with a rear naked choke, then back to mount, and then back to the choke. Can he get it? No Magny on the back, he controls the action by landing short strikes that are doing damage. Means is trying to look for a way out. Magny is in side control, then into half guard. He stays active with strikes to end the round and the fight.

Decision: Neil Magny def. Tim Means by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Lightweight: Erik Koch(14-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) vs. Daron Cruickshank (14-3 MMA, 3-2 UFC)

1st RD: A nice exchange, but Cruickshank lands a right hand. Koch with a body kick, but Cruickshank hits a back fist. Koch with combo of strikes, Koch with a leg kick and then a head kick. Mixing it up, Cruickshank with a running leg kick, Koch with a swing and a miss. Koch is the most aggressive fighter here. Cruickshank with a nice counter shot that lands at the 3 minute mark. Koch with a nice inside leg kick, Koch with another. Cruickshank with a body kick, Koch answers with one of his own. Cruickshank with an overhand right. Cruickshank misses a spinning kick, Koch with a leg kick. Cruickshank with a head kick that lands and he finishes him on the ground with a flurry of elbows to the face. That was awesome, but that was a very slow ref stop.

Decision:  Daron Cruickshank def. Erik Koch by TKO at 3:21, R1

Middleweight: Costa Philippou (14-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) vs. Lorenz Larkin (12-4 MMA, 5-3 UFC)

1st RD: Co-main here we go, Larkin with a head kick that misses and Philippou lands a nice right hand. They are going at it, Philippou stuns Larkin and they step into the cage. Philippou pushes off and goes back to hunting. Larkin with a leg kick, they both connect with one. Philippou with a right jab and they clinch on the fence. Philippou with leg kicks and then foot stomps while on the cage. Philippou lets go and they go back to striking. Larking with a huge uppercut and it hurts Philippou. Philippou fires back with his own, but Larkin lands a big body kick. Larkin with a nice superman punch, Philippou with an overhand right. Philippou with a head kick that misses. Philippou with a big right hand, but Larking answers and connects with a combo. Philippou with an overhand right that catches Larkin on the jaw, they clinch on the fence at 1:45. Larkin with a turning elbow to the jaw, Philippou with a left and then a right hook, Larkins fall and goes to sleep. WOW!

Welterweight: Matt Brown (18-11 MMA, 11-5 UFC) vs. Erick Silva (16-4 MMA, 4-3 UFC)

1st RD: What a staredown, alright here we go. Brown with a head kick, but Silva with a takedown. This is a brawl, Brown with a head kick but does not hurt Brown. Silva with a head kick, then an uppercut to brown. Silva kicks Brown in the gut, which makes Brown fall and then Silva tries to finish him with ground and pound, Silva locks in the rear naked choke, but does not get it. Silva with back control, full hooks and land strikes. Silva trying to lock something in and has a neck crank, will he tap? NO Brown breaks it up. Silva looking for something, Brown tries to survive. Silva has the right arm trapped of Brown. Matt Brown gets out and clinch on the fence. Brown hurts Silva and lands a series of knees to the face, huge elbows by Brown. He is trying to finish, Silva eats a knee to the gut and elbows to the face by Brown. He misses a head kick, Silva nails one and then so does Brown. Matt Brown with a leg takedown, then uppercuts and then a knee to the gut. He throws him down again, ground and pound, Brown with more knees to the face of Silva. Erick Silva is circling the cage, Brown with another big right hand, huge shots by Brown. Matt Brown with a takedown and several punches to end the round. WOW.

2nd RD: Brown goes right after him, he nails a knee to the face and then swarms him. Silva fights back with another body kick that hurts Brown. Silva goes for a spinning elbow, but misses. Brown with uppercuts, and hooks and kicks, oh my. Brown with elbows, knees and the kitchen sink. Brown with a liver shot, Silva misses a right jab. Brown with more strikes than a knee to the body. Silva is hurt, Brown with a head kick. He lands a straight right, he lands another knee. Brown with two left hooks, Silva is just trying to survive. Silva with a body kick, but Brown nails a knee to the face. Silva with a body kick that hurts Brown, Silva gets taken down by Brown. Matt Brown in side control, lands a series of right hands. Brown with elbows, he locks in a triangle choke, can he get it? Brown lets it go, Brown locks in a darth choke, while landing a knee to the gut. He lets it go and ground and pounds him while in the mount position. Brown goes for an armbar, but Silva gets out and then BRown locks in a choke, but Silva gets out. Silva on top, can’t or won’t do much, the two try to catch their breath to end the round.

3rd RD: Silva with a right jab right off the bat, Brown with a head kick. Brown with a left hook, then a series of knees to the face of Silva. He lands a few uppercuts and then a spinning back fist. Brown with a takedown, he is in the guard of Silva. He reigns down punches from the top position. Brown with more elbows and it cuts open Silva. Brown stands over him and throwing more leather, crazy pace, Herb Dean stops the fight, this one is over.
