Well, you would think it simple and #1 contender Alexander Gustafsson would agree, however UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones does not. Also throw in the fact that fellow Light Heavyweight Daniel Cormier wants a title shot as well.
“I agreed to the fight, but he hasn’t agreed yet, so I’m waiting for that,” Gustafsson said. “I’m still waiting for a time and venue.”
Daniel Cormier said: “I’ve earned a title shot,. I’ve got five top 10 wins. I’m undefeated. I haven’t lost a round. I haven’t lost a fight…Yeah, my resume speaks for itself.”
Gustafsson said: “[Cormier] is a tough competitor, but I’m first in line”.
Daniel Cormier (15-0) has six knockouts, four submissions and five decision victories in his MMA career. In his last five fights he has beaten the top names that MMA has to offer. He beat Josh Barnett via unanimous decision at Strikeforce – Barnett vs. Cormier on May / 19 / 2012 and Dion Staring via TKO at Strikeforce – Marquardt vs. Saffiedine on Jan / 12 / 2013. He made his UFC return against Frank Mir and won the fight via unanimous decision at UFC on Fox 7 – Henderson vs. Melendez on Apr / 20 / 2013. He then beat Roy Nelson via unanimous decision at UFC 166 – Velasquez vs. Dos Santos 3 on Oct / 19 / 2013 and in his last fight prior to UFC 173, he knocked out Patrick Cummins at UFC 170 – Rousey vs. McMann on Feb / 22 / 2014. He is coming off a win over Dan Henderson at UFC 173.
“That’s something you sign every fight, and it’s part of the job,” Gustafsson said. “You get a fight opportunity, and you agree with it, and then you sign a bout agreement. No less. It’s a very easy thing to do.
Jon Jones (20-1) has an 11 fight winning streak. He defeated Maurício Rua via TKO to win the title in 2011 and went on to defend his title six times with wins over fighters named: Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen and finally back in September against Alexander Gustafsson.
“I don’t know about any of that (with Jones’ negotiations). For me, the UFC is my job. I can live my dream, so for me, it’s not even a question. But that’s just me.”
If Jones signs on to fight Gustafsson, they would fight on Aug. 30 in Las Vegas at a pay per view event scheduled for the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
