Former UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz is finally scheduled for a fight. He will make his long-anticipated return to action against Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 178 on Sept. 27 in Las Vegas.
Cruz confirmed the fight to ESPN.com on Tuesday.
“I’m excited to finally be back,” Cruz said. “It’s been a long time coming, but I feel great and I’m already training hard. Mizugaki is tough and he’s been on a roll, but I’m ready to get back in there and prove that I’m the best bantamweight in the world.”
Dominick Cruz (19-1) The longtime WEC fighter made his UFC debut on a eight fight winning streak. The former UFC bantamweight champion never lost the title, but due to injuries he was forced to give up the title. In his last four fights prior to UFC 178, he is 4-0. He beat Joseph Benavidez via Split Decision at WEC 50 – Cruz vs. Benavidez 2 on Aug / 18 / 2010, then Scott Jorgensen via Unanimous Decision at WEC 53 – Henderson vs. Pettis on Dec / 16 / 2010. Then Urijah Faber via Unanimous Decision at UFC 132 – Cruz vs. Faber 2 on Jul / 02 / 2011 and then Demetrious Johnson via Unanimous Decision at UFC Live 6 – Cruz vs. Johnson on Oct / 01 / 2011.
Takeya Mizugaki (21-7) He made his UFC debut against Reuben Duran at UFC – The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale on Jun / 04 / 2011, but lost the fight via rear naked choke. He won his next two fights outside of the promotion and returned against Alex Soto via unanimous decision at UFC on Fuel TV 3 – Korean Zombie vs. Poirier on May / 15 / 2012, but then his fight with Roland Delorme was Overturned by Commission at UFC 149 – Faber vs. Barao on Jul / 21 / 2012. He beat Edwin Figueroa via TKO at UFC 156 – Aldo vs. Edgar on Feb / 02 / 2013 and in his last fight he beat George Roop via TKO at UFC Fight Night – Fight for the Troops 3 on Nov / 06 / 2013. He is coming off a win over Francisco Rivera by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC 173.
This fight will be the third fight added to UFC 178, A light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson is scheduled to headline the card. Expect this fight to be on the PPV side of the event.
The event takes place on September 27th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
