Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva Nominated for “Best Fighter” ESPY

Lyoto MachidaUFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida and middleweight champion Anderson Silva have been nominated for ESPN’s 2009 ESPY award for Best Fighter. Boxers Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley will also be competing for the award.

Machida (15-0) is 2-0 in 2009 with a first-round knockout of Thiago Silva and a second-round knockout of previous title-holder Rashad Evans. He’s scheduled to fight Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in October at UFC 104.

Silva (24-4) has looked lackluster in his most-recent title defenses, defeating Patrick Cote in October after Cote was unable to continue due to a knee injury and topping Thales Leites by unanimous decision in April in his most-recent fight. “The Spider” will move up to 205-pounds for his next fight against former champion Forrest Griffin in August at UFC 101.
