If you were looking forward to seeing Nik Lentz battle Charles Oliveira at UFC Fight Night 50 tonight, then you’re going to be sad to hear that the latter has been pulled from the card. As a result, the Ledyard, Connecticut event will feature 9 scraps instead of 10.
If you missed it, Oliveira missed weight yesterday for the fight by coming in at 150 pounds. The featherweight was fined, and the bout was expected to go on, but on Friday the UFC announced it’s been ditched.
According to a statement from the promotion, Oliveira missed weight because he’s been ill recently. On Friday, he met with doctors and it was determined he’s unfit to fight.
After he failed to make weight yesterday, Oliveira detailed to MMA Fighting.com some of the medical issues he’s been having leading up to the fight.
“I was sick for the past week in Brazil, and I was pretty bad when I got to the United States,” Oliveira said. “I couldn’t cut weight, and I’m not feeling well to cut weight, so that’s why I missed weight. I had high fever, headache. I think it was a viral infection. But I was the one who asked for this fight, so I couldn’t withdraw.”
The Brazilian was also asked whether he was worried that the failed weight cut would affect his performance versus Lentz, and he replied “we’ll see.”
It’s an unfortunate turn of events for Oliveira, who was coming off back-to-back, submission victories over Hatsu Hioki and Andy Ogle.
Prior to the victories, the vet was defeated by contenders Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar in consecutive fights. The 24 year-old, who already has fought in the UFC 11 times… is 3-2 in his last 5 contests.
UFC FN 50 will be hosted by the Foxwoods Casino Resort, and will feature Gegard Mousai taking on Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in the headliner.
In the co-mainevent, Alistair Overeem will battle heavyweight Ben Rothwell.
