Takeya Mizugaki is no slouch. His career has been a long and successful one, and he’s been thrilling us since the days of the WEC. So when it was announced that former UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz would be returning after knee injuries that stripped him of his belt and kept him on the shelf for YEARS, it was a tall order for Cruz to be taking on Mizugaki in his first time back.
Well, the champ’s still got it. From his sprint to the Octagon while Cypress Hill music blares to his dance around the cage, and his mad rush once the referee said “Go!”, this one was all about Cruz overwhelming Mizugaki in just over a minute. It began with a thunderous double-leg takedown, and when Mizugaki struggled to cage-walk back to his feet, Cruz blasted him with a rapid-fire punches to the face that soon had the Japanese fighter slumped over and dreaming about tiny birds flying in circles around his head.
Cruz is back, and based on his performance, the reigning champ – TJ Dillashaw – better watch out.
Result: Dominick Cruz def. Takeya Mizugaki via TKO (Punches) at 1:01, R1
