UFC: Conor McGregor Calling for Another “Victim” to Face Before Fighting for Title

Kelsey Mowatt

Yes, Conor McGregor has made more statements which have the MMA media jumping all over it (guilty as charged…), as now the rising star is saying he wants to fight before he challenges for the UFC’s featherweight title. All this comes not long after McGregor told an Irish outlet that he was hoping to fight for the 145 belt in early 2015, and then defend it next summer in Dublin’s Aviva stadium, before moving to lightweight…

Well, whether the UFC has reached out to McGregor since to discuss alternatives, or the fighter is just eager to throw down sooner than later, here is what “Notorious” tweeted out on Wednesday:

It would be somewhat surprising if the UFC all of a sudden has elected to book McGregor for a bout in the interim, as waiting to see what goes down between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes on October 25th makes sense. If the champ decisively defeats Mendes for a second time, then the search for the next contender would be on, and McGregor could certainly be that guy (the UFC enjoys selling PPV’s after all…).

But what if Mendes narrowly defeats Aldo? Will the UFC look at booking Aldo for an immediate rematch? This is a guy who has been a champion with ZUFFA now since 2010…Originally the promotion tapped Renan Barao for another shot with TJ Dillashaw let’s not forget, and Aldo is also one of the sport’s pound-for-pound contenders.

Then again, maybe the UFC has decided to put McGregor’s #1 contender status on the line, and they’re looking to book something right away?

Guess we’ll find out soon enough. The October 25th, UFC 179 card will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and will be available via PPV.
