Although Alistair Overeem has been stopped in three of his last four fights, the heavyweight clearly remains as confident as ever, as he’s predicting a violent and quick victory at UFC on FOX 13.
Just how quick you say? Well, in the “Road to the Octagon” show for this Saturday’s card, Overeem had this to say about his fight with Stefan Struve (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I’m really not that impressed by him,” Overeem said. “I’m a striker, and I like to knock people out. I’m going to knock him out in the first 30 seconds.”
Wow. Considering what’s unfolded in his career lately, you would think Overeem might go with a more subtle, less decisive prediction, but hey, do what you gotta do right? The bold prediction also comes at a time when Ben Rothwell, who stopped Overeem in September, has been jumping on the Dutch fighter for some of the comments he’s been making.
Overeem may not be “impressed” by Struve, but this is a man who has gone 9-4 in the UFC…Not only has the massive heavyweight defeated Stipe Miocic, but his losses have come against top tier competition in Junior dos Santos, Roy Nelson, Travis Browne and Mark Hunt. That said, Struve hasn’t fought now since March, 2013, so cage rust could play a factor.
If you’ve been following Overeem lately, then you know that he’s kept his head up the entire time, despite his recent run of setbacks. The 34 year-old believes he’s improving thanks to the work he’s been doing at gyms like Jackson’s MMA, and is still certain he can be a title contender.
“We’ve corrected a lot of mistakes, and I’ve noticed my focus is really getting sharp again,” Overeem said. “I feel more focused and better prepared. I’ve evolved. That’s all focused on learning and getting better. In this sport you need to keep going up. You need to improve.”
We shall see soon enough. It’s an interesting fight, not only because of each man’s finishing skills, but because of what’s on the line for Overeem. If the star loses, it will almost certainly end his UFC run, which few people saw coming when he took out Brock Lesnar in 2011.
UFC on FOX 13 will be hosted by the U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona and will feature dos Santos taking on Miocic in the main event.
