Renato Moicano Makes Statement in UFC Debut, Taps Niinimaki

With just 9 days of notice, the Brazilian Renato Moicano made a statement by dispatching the talented Finn grappler, Tom Niinimaki. Despite both fighters being known for their expert-level grappling skills, the fight didn’t spend very much on the mat at all. In fact, the whole first round was spent on the feet with Moicano getting the better of the striking exchanges.

Moicano displayed some very impressive Muay Thai skills on the feet as he used his lengthy range to light the stockier Tom Niinimaki up from a distance with straight, crisp punches and powerful kicks. Tom tried desperately to move in past the reach disadvantage that he was experiencing, but Moicano used his kicks well to keep “Stoneface” away, and used his own feet to circle the Octagon and create great angles that kept him out of harms way.

The second round would prove much of the same as Moicano’s hands really started to shine. A beautiful left hook caught Niinimaki behind the ear and put him on the mat. With that said, the expert grappler used this as a time to put his submission skills on display by immediately mounting the Finn, taking the back, and eliciting the tapout with the rear-naked choke in the second round.
