In a heavyweight collision between two known finishers in Shawn “The Savage” Jordan and the UFC newcomer Jared Cannonier, a first round finish seemed pretty much inevitable – and it was. Despite Jordan being the heavier of the two by about twenty pounds, he looked equally as fast as his counterpart Cannonier, who showcased some quick movement and striking skills early on. Jordan made sure to control the center of the Octagon and looked to time the “Killa Gorilla” coming in, and that’s exactly what he did. A short lead right hook clipped Cannonier coming in; the punch took out his equilibrium and Shawn just needed a few more follow up lefts to get Big John McCarthy to intervene.
Great win for Shawn Jordan. I was very impressed with his speed; in fact, both heavyweights looked to be very agile and mobile early on. It’s clear that Shawn Jordan is a very athletic guy at 260 pounds as shown by his post-fight back flip that most light-heavyweights probably couldn’t pull off. Even though Cannonier didn’t get much of a chance to display his skills, I definitely can’t wait to see him again because he looked to be pretty quick and agile for a powerful heavyweight.
