Benson Henderson said he wanted to get back into the Octagon ASAP, following his extremely competitive, some have said controversial decision loss to Donald Cerrone, and the lightweight has gotten his wish. Well, pretty much.
The UFC has announced that Henderson has agreed to replace the injured Bobby Green at UFC Fight Night 63, who had been scheduled to fight Jorge Masvidal. That card will take place on April 4th in Fairfax, Virginia, so although it’s not right around the corner, it’s less than three months away.
According to the announcement, Green tore his quad while training, but no other details regarding the severity of the injury were disclosed.
So, Henderson (21-5) will be looking to end the first, two fight losing streak of his career. Before the former lightweight champ faced Cerrone at UFC FN 59 on Sunday, he was stopped by Rafael dos Anjos in the opening round last August.
Masvidal (28-8) continues to climb the lightweight ranks thanks to a three fight winning streak and an 8-2 run. Most recently, the outspoken fighter worked his way to a unanimous decision win over James Krause in September.
It’s an interesting and important match-up for both men, as Masvidal will surely crack the top ten if he defeats “Smooth”, while the latter needs a victory to remain in the top five.
UFC FN 63 will also feature a fight between top ranked featherweights Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas.
