In Roan Carneiro’s highly anticipated Octagon return, the Brazilian got in and out of the Octagon quickly with a first round rear-naked choke over Mark Munoz.
The Filipino Wrecking Machine shot his patented double leg shot on Carneiro early on, but Carneiro threatened with a guillotine and used that to transition on top and in side control. From there, Carneiro methodically transitioned from the side to the back, and shortly after had Mark Munoz unconscious with the rear-naked choke. Referee Jerin Valel gave Munoz ever chance he could to somehow miraculously escape, but after being immobile for several moments, Carneiro signaled the referee to stop the fight.
This is Mark Munoz’s second consecutive loss by rear-naked choke, but Roan Carneiro showcased just how extensive of a grappler he is in this performance. I think Roan could potentially be a serious force at middleweight and this is the ideal performance he needed for his anticipated return to the UFC. The stoppage came at 1:40 of the first round in UFC 184’s prelim headliner.
This was Carneiro’s first appearance in the UFC since UFC 88.
