UFC 185: Main Card Play-By-Play And Results

The prelims are over for UFC 185, so lets move to the main card, which will feature not one, but two title fights.

Chris Cariaso vs. Henry Cejudo 

Cariaso lands a snapping kick to the body to start the fight. Cariaso lands another but Cejudo counters. They clinch up and Cejudo takes the fight down. Cariaso gets back to his feet but takes a knee to the body. Cejudo lands a left hook and the flyweights clinch up. Cejudo fires a head kick and flurries in. Cariaso has back against the cage but gets taken down. Cejudo lands a few shots from above but Cariaso gets back up. Cariaso breaks away and plants a kick to the body. Round ends.

Round 2: Cariaso comes out and fires a quick shot. Cejudo continues to move forward and takes Cariaso down. The latter works his way back up. Caraiso gets double under hooks and pushes Cejudo to the cage. The decorated wrestler breaks free. Cejudo fires a hard kick to the body and takes Cariaso down. Cejudo is trying to pass but can’t. Cejudo lets Cariaso back up. They exchange a few strikes and the round ends.

Round 3: Both men come out firing strikes but Cariaso gets taken down again. Cejudo fires down elbows from above. The fight is back on its feet, and although Cariaso is landing the odd shot, he’s way behind. Cejudo takes Cariaso down once more. Cejudo lands some knees to the body and moves into a neck crank. Cariaso defends and plants a nice up kick. Wow. Cariaso dives for a leg but the fight comes to an end.

Roy Nelson vs. Alistair Overeem

Overeem throws an oblique kick to begin the fight. Not much going on in the first minute. Overeem comes in with a hard knee to the body. Nelson wings an overhand right but Overeem blocks it. Overeem throws a cracking leg kick. Overeem follows up with a right; Nelson counters. Overeem lands another knee. And another. Wow. Nelson comes in and fires a flurry of big, big punches but Overeem defends. “The Reem” lands another knee. Overeem digs to the body with a left hook. Overeem briefly crumbles Nelson to the mat with a leg kick. Yikes. Overeem punishes Nelson to the body with a kick. Another knee from Overeem. Round ends. Nice round for Overeem.

Round 2: Overeem fires another leg kick. Nelson chucks a big right but it misses. Overeem, again, comes in with another knee to the body. Overeem eats a big right hand. Wow. Overeem comes back with a knee. The Dutch heavyweight fires a left at Nelson. Overeem comes with a front kick. Crowd roars as Overeem runs away from Nelson. Overeem throw a right, tries to take Nelson down, but can’t get it. Overeem continues to work over the body of Nelson with shots. Nelson rushes in and fires a couple of hard shots. Overeem lands yet another knee which glances of the head of “Big Country”. Nelson fires a big right hand but the round ends.

Round 3: Overeem plants a kick to the body and follows up with a right hand. Nelson takes a low blow and the fight’s momentarily stopped. Overeem lands a straight right. Nelson clips Overeem with a punch and the two clinch up. Overeem breaks away. Overeem fires a high kick which wobbles Nelson. Wow. Nelson attempts a takedown but can’t get it. Overeem plants another kick to the body. Nelson needs to do something big and fast. Crazy. Nelson storms in and floors Overeem with a left hand. The latter gets back to his feet and the round ends. Too little, too late for Nelson.

Matt Brown vs. Johny Hendricks

Brown comes out aggressively. Hendricks wings a couple of punches and takes Brown down. The latter gets back up. Brown throws a right and Hendricks clinches up. Brown gets taken to the mat again. Hendricks is in Brown’s guard but hasn’t been able to do much. Hendricks stands up and Brown gets back to his feet. Brown fires a head kick. Brown comes in with a knee and an elbow. “The Immortal” is already cut. Hendricks takes the welterweight down again. Hendricks lands a couple of shots from above. Round ends.

Round 2: Brown lands a jab and then throws a headkick. Brown briefly stumbles to the mat but gets back up. Hendricks lands a nice uppercut and takes Brown down once more. Hendricks is working from Brown’s half guard. Hendricks is landing shots from above. Brown re-establishes guard and the ref stands them up. Hendricks comes in with a hard shot and a leg kick. Brown looks really tired. “Bigg Rigg” scores another takedown but Brown gets to his feet. Hendricks flurries in with hard shots but Brown counters. Again, Hendricks takes the fight down. Round ends. Brown needs a stoppage to win this fight.

Round 3: Hendricks slips to the mat shortly into the round but gets back up. Brown flurries in, lands a couple of shots, but Hendricks shoots in. Brown is looking for an inverted triangle but gives it up. Brown lands an elbow but Hendricks clinches up. Hendricks–whose left eye is swelling–gets another takedown. Hendricks is working from sidemount. Wow. Brown starts hunting for another inverted triangle but can’t get it. Brown is firing hard shots from below. Hendricks maintains top position and the round ends.

Carla Esparza vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Esparza is looking to defend the strawweight title for the first time since she won it in December. Jedrzejczyk comes out pursuing Esparza. The champ shoots in but can’t get the takedown. Esparza shoots in again, and after some work, she gets the takedown. Jedrzejczyk gets back up. Esparza lands a right. Wow. Esparza shoots in again and eventually gets it. Jedrzejczyk, however, works her way back to her feet. Jedrzejczyk lands an elbow on the break. Esparza shoots in but it was telegraphed. Jedrzejczyk fires off a nice right hand. Crazy. Esparza goes for another takedown but can’t get it. Jedrzejczyk plants a right hand. Jedrzejczyk is winging hard shots and is landing. Another cracking right from Jedrzejczyk. Esparza dives in for a takedown, but again, Jedrzejczyk sprawls nicely. Jedrzejczyk lands a hard elbow and the round ends.

Round 2: Jedrzejczyk flurries to begin the round. Esparza is hunting for a single leg takedown but can’t get it. Jedrzejczyk cracks Esparza again with a right hand. Esparza shoots for a takedown again but can’t get it. Jedrzejczyk blasts Esparza with another big right. Esparza is getting desperate. Jedrzejczyk plants more hard punches. Esparza telegraphs a takedown. Jedrzejczyk continues to punish Esparza with shots. The champ shoots in but can’t get it. Again, Esparza takes a few shots and shoots in but can’t follow through. Jedrzejczyk blasts Esparza again. The latter is getting battered along the cage with punches and the ref, thankfully, steps in. What a performance by Jedrzejczyk.
