Luke Rockhold continued to impress last night at UFC on FOX 15, by scoring a one sided, submission win over the renowned Lyoto Machida. Not surprisingly, right after the win, the #4 ranked middleweight called for a title shot.
But… the card also saw Ronaldo Souza quickly take out Chris Camozzi, and although the latter isn’t a top contender, “Jacare” is ranked #1. He too, believes he should be booked to face the winner of the May 23rd scrap, between champion Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort.
So who does Dana White think should be next in line? Well, following the event, this is what the UFC President had to say (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“Luke looked unbelievable tonight,” White said. “Look at what he did, and who he did it to. Beating Machida like that is a big deal, and people are probably are going to say, ‘Jacare’ fought Chris Camozzi again. Let me tell you what, Chris Camozzi stepped up on six days’ notice to take this fight, and I agree with Chris Camozzi – he’s not the same fighter he was two years ago, and for a guy like ‘Jacare,’ ‘Jacare’ had everything to lose and nothing to gain. He’s fighting the same guy, he’s not ranked – he didn’t complain about it once; he went right in there and he handled his business.
“So we’re in a position right now where we’ve got two guys who looked unbelievable who could fight next for the title. It’s a good problem to have.”
Yes. Although it can make for some tough decisions, having a loaded middleweight division certainly makes it easier to book compelling fights. White went on to say that they’ll wait to see how Weidman-Belfort “goes”, and then they’ll make a decision.
It’s going to be interesting to see what goes down at UFC 187, and then what bout the promotion books for the champion afterwards…
That card will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
