Conor McGregor has received plenty of praise in recent months, and clearly Hollywood star Jean Claude Van Damme is sold on all the “Notorious” hype. Yes, that’s right, JCVD.
Recently, Van Damme appeared on UFC announcer Bruce Buffer’s podcast “It’s Time”, and of course, they engaged in some MMA talk. McGregor is scheduled to fight featherweight champ Jose Aldo on July 11th at UFC 189, and JCVD weighed in on the rising contender and his upcoming bout.
Here is some of what the experienced martial artist, he is a second degree black belt in Shotokan Karate after all, had to say (quotes via MMA Fighting.com):
“A guy like McGregor, he’s got that type of thing,” said Van Damme. “He’s hungry. It’s new for him. He appreciates the money with a big smile. He’s saying it out loud. He’s living a very great adventure. This is the time when you go from nothing to being bored. I’m advising him to enjoy every second of the day.
“It’s going to be hard to beat [McGregor] because he’s fighting with this, plus the techniques and his height. Plus he’s got the Irish people behind him and he created a connection between him and the audience of his early fights and he wants to be loved.”
Even if you’re not a McGregor fan, you can’t deny that there’s a ton of momentum riding behind him right now. Can he and all that buzz get past Aldo, however? Who is the greatest featherweight of all time, and has won 18 in a row? Guess we’ll see soon enough. JCVD reportedly admitted he’s a big fan of Aldo as well, but stopped short of making a prediction for the bout.
Van Damme also went on to compare McGregor to heavyweight great, Fedor Emelianenko, in terms of fight IQ, but argued that the latter was never “really in shape”….
UFC 189 will go down on July 11th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Perhaps JCVD will be in attendance?
