Although Conor McGregor has spent much of this year verbally trashing Jose Aldo, the featherweight contender already had quite the beef going with Chad Mendes, even before they were booked to fight at UFC 189. Yes, when you consider that McGregor has criticized and or insulted most of the UFC’s best 145’ers, clearly this isn’t a surprise.
Of course, now that they are scheduled to fight on July 11th, the trash talk between the two is reaching new levels. In a recent media call to promote UFC 189, the stars had more than a few choice words for each other. Case in point, when McGregor was asked for his assessment of Mendes, here is some of what the brash fighter had to say (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I think Chad is the substitute, the B-level,” McGregor said. “I think he’s a wrestler with an overhand that gasses. I think his body is in disproportion and that hampers him as a fighter. I think that’s why he gasses and he gets that tiredness. And that’s why when I’m pressing him and pressing him in these exchanges and scrambles, his body is going to be screaming for oxygen and I’m going to be in his face cracking him with everything I have, every shot, the heel, the knee, the elbow, the fist. Every shot in the book I have. And that will be that.
“Eventually, he will give, like they all do.”
How about that for a breakdown of the promotion’s #1 contender, who has cruised through many of the UFC’s top featherweights, and has only lost to Aldo so far…Mendes apparently asked McGregor how he’s going to be able to press if he’s on his back, to which “Notorious” replied that he’ll “butcher” the noted wrestler from the bottom.
Guess we’ll find out soon enough huh? Of course, everyone in their right mind wants to see Aldo-McGregor, but it’s going to be very interesting to see whether the latter can answer all the questions, regarding his takedown defense. It should be noted that Mr. Aldo has done that repeatedly during his reign.
UFC 189 will be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In the co-headliner, Rory MacDonald will challenge welterweight champ Robbie Lawler.
