Of course, the man McGregor defeated was Chad Mendes, who Aldo KO’d in 2012, and more recently decisioned in October. Mendes was able to take McGregor down on several occasions during their bout, and hit him with some punishing shots, but “Notorious” went on to record the stoppage win.
Well, Aldo appeared on the most recent “UFC Tonight“, and when asked if he was impressed by his rival at UFC 189, he stated (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“Not really. It was a good fight to watch. It’s exactly what I expected.”
Now sure, considering Aldo’s relationship with McGregor, it’s not surprising to hear him say this. But, the champion isn’t the only person who believes Mendes exposed some of the holes in McGregor’s game.
And what about the fact McGregor now holds the interim belt? Does that bother Aldo?
“Not really, it’s the interim belt. I’m the champion. I have the belt.”
Fair enough. Aldo also reportedly added that when he finally faces McGregor, “I’m going to run him over. He’s not even going to see what went over him.”
That fight can’t get here soon enough. The UFC is reportedly hoping to book Aldo-McGregor for late 2015.
The two were scheduled to fight at UFC 189, but Aldo injured his ribs a couple of weeks before the bout and was forced to withdraw.
