A matchup between heavyweight contenders Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez, originally scheduled for UFC 108 on January 2, is now being targeted for February’s UFC 110 in Australia, according to MMAjunkie.
A severe staph infection forced Nogueira to withdraw from UFC 108 earlier this month, but the former heavyweight champion recovered quickly after undergoing treatment in the U.S. and hoped to meet Velasquez at the UFC’s Australian debut.
UFC 110 takes place on February 21 at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia and is co-headlined by Wanderlei Silva’s middleweight debut against Michael Bisping.
Velasquez (7-0) improved his UFC record to 5-0 with a second-round knockout of Ben Rothwell last month at UFC 104, while Nogueira (32-5-1) rebounded from a disappointing loss to Frank Mir with an impressive decision win over Randy Couture in August.
UFC 110 is also rumored to feature Dong Hyun Kim vs. Chris Lytle, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic vs. Ben Rothwell, and Stephan Bonnar vs. Krzysztof Soszynski, while Australians Elvis Sinosic and Chris Haseman will reportedly return to the Octagon to rematch on the pay-per-view event’s preliminary card.
