Holly Holm admits that she was one of the thousands of people who was surprised to hear she’s fighting Ronda Rousey next, but that doesn’t mean she’s not confident in her ability to become bantamweight champ.
Recently the UFC turned heads throughout the sport, by announcing that Holm would fight Rousey on January 2nd. After Robbie Lawler went down with a thumb injury, his bout with Carlos Condit was moved to UFC 195, and Rousey-Holm was pushed back to November 14th.
Since Holm is ranked #8, and has gone the distance in both of her UFC wins, no one was expecting “The Preacher’s Daughter” to get tapped for a title shot. Even though she’s a decorated pugilist, and has long been regarded as a future opponent for Rousey.
Recently Holm spoke to MMA Junkie.com about her upcoming title fight, and while doing so, the bantamweight stated:
“Did it come sooner than we would think? That’s not a lie to say yeah, it came soon, but I’m really excited for it,” Holm said. “There’s so many girls in the division, but guess what: Even before I signed with the UFC it was like, ‘Hey, when are you going to fight Ronda Rousey?’…”
“Nobody would want to watch a fight if they knew what was going to happen; the unknown is there, and anything can happen,” Holm added. “I’m very capable. I’m walking with every bit of confidence into this fight. (I’m) confidence without being cocky or overconfident.”
It’s going to be interesting to see how Holm handles herself when she’s in the cage with Rousey, who has needed less than three minutes total to defeat her last four opponents. Currently several betting lines have Holm as a +950 underdog…
UFC 193 will be hosted by the Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia.
