Takanori Gomi Likely to Fight Kenny Florian in UFC Debut

Kenny FlorianFormer PRIDE lightweight champion Takanori Gomi, who recently signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC,  is likely to make his Octagon debut against Kenny Florian, according to ESPN’s MMA Live.

UFC President Dana White was asked about the possible matchup at Saturday’s post-UFC 108 press conference, and said Florian “could be” Gomi’s first opponent, without revealing a date for the likely bout.

Gomi (31-5), regarded as one of the world’s top lightweights after going 15-1 between 2004 and 2008, recently dropped back-to-back bouts to Sergey Golyaev and Satoru Kitaoka, but “Fireball Kid” has bounced back with wins over Takashi Nakakura and Tony Hervey in his most-recent fights.

Florian (12-4), the runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter 1, lost to lightweight champ BJ Penn in August following six-straight victories, including wins over Joe Stevenson and Roger Huerta, but rebounded in December with a second-round submission of Clay Guida.
