UFC FN 78: Prelims Play-By-Play And Results

UFC Fight Night 78 is underway in Monterrey, Mexico, so let’s get to some of the preliminary action.

In tonight’s main event, Kelvin Gastelum will battle fellow welterweight contender Neil Magny.

Fight Pass Prelim Results

Alvaro Herrera def. Vernon Ramos via TKO (punches) R1, 0:30

Polo Reyes def. Cesar Arzamendia via KO (punches) R1, 3:42

Michel Prazeres def. Valmir Lazaro via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Gabriel Benitez vs. Andre Fili 

Round 1: Fili fires a hard kick to the body. Benitez is returning with kicks. Another nice kick from Fili. Latter goes high with a kick but Benitez partially blocks it. Fili with some feints. Wow. Fili lands a head kick and flurries in a vicious barrage of shots. The fight’s done. Impressive win for Fili.

Scott Jorgensen vs. Alejandro Perez

Round 1: Perez fires the first strike of the bout–a leg kick. Jorgensen with a left and a leg kick. Jorgensen changes levels put Perez moves out. Nice right from Jorgensen. Latter comes in with a double and gets the takedown. Perez pops back up. Jorgensen plants a right and looks for a TD but can’t get it. Another right from Jorgensen. Perez counters a leg kick with a left. Hard leg kick from Perez. Round ends. Jorgensen is having difficulties with his left calf.

Round 2: Jorgensen’s calf is clearly messed up. This fight isn’t going to last long. Perez is firing in shots and Jorgensen can’t push off with his right leg. Wow. Perez is tossing in blows. What heart from Jorgensen. Could be a cramp. Now Jorgensen seems to be able to push off the leg. Crazy. Perez kicks the calf again. Jorgensen goes for a single leg but can’t get it. Another kick to the calf and Jorgensen wobbles. Latter fires in a hard left. Hard kick to the body from Perez. Jorgensen gets swept to the mat but gets to his feet. Jorgensen goes for a kick but crumples to the mat in pain. He taps. Yikes. Gritty performance from the vet.

Alejandro Perez def. Scott Jorgensen via TKO (left injury) R2, 4:26

Bartosz Fabinski vs. Hector Urbina 

Round 1: Fabinski plants a jab and shoots in for a TD. He gets it. Fabinski with some shots to the body and head. Urbina is still working from guard. Ref stands them up. Fabinski charges in again and gets the TD. Hard elbow from Fabinski. Latter passes into half guard. More punches from above from Fabinski. Round ends.

Round 2: Fabinski runs and immediately gets another TD. Urbina scrambles and gets to his feet. Wow. Big knee from Urbina but Fabinski takes it down again. Fabinski is working from within full guard again. Urbina is looking for a triangle but can’t get it. Ref stands it up. Fabinski comes in gets yet another TD. Fabinski is in sidemount. Wow. Urbina rolls out and lands some shots. Fight’s back up. Urbina wings a head kick but misses. Fabinski pushes him to the cage. Urbina has a cut above his left eye. Action’s stopped so doctor can look at it. Fight continues (but was started with them separated when it should have been against the cage). Round ends. 

Round 3: Replay shows headbutt was responsible for cut. Urbina charges out but again gets taken down.Urbina is look for a guillotine and may be able to use it for a sweep. Fabinski work his way free and remains on top. Urbina is look for a kimura but can’t get it. Urbina gives up his back but gets out the backdoor. Urbina is pushed up against the fence and is looking for a submission. Elbows from Urbina. Final horn goes.

Taylor Lapilus vs. Erik Perez 

Round 1: Crowd is singing, giving Perez their support. Both me fire headkicks that miss. Lapilus with another kick that just misses. Lapilus plants a hard left. Perez is keeping busy but appears to be the slower of the two. They clinch up briefly. Good exchange in the pocket. Perez with a good right. Perez catches a kick and looks for the sweep but can’t get it. Nice body kick from Perez. Lapilus digs to the leg of Perez with a kick. Latter flurries in and lands. Lapilus with a hard counter. Round ends as Perez goes for a TD.

Round 2: Perez is getting his timing down. Lapilus chucks in a hard counter left, and another. Perez comes in and gets tagged with another left. Wow. Perez is on the ground and Lapilus jumps on a guillotine. Perez gets out. Nicely done. Lapilus is looking for a kimura. Perez works his arm free. Latter lands some shots from above while working inside the guard. Round ends.

Round 3: Perez fakes level change and fires headkick that’s blocked. Lapilus shoots in and Perez is defending against the cage. Perez reverses and now Lapilus is looking for a kimura. Perez rolls out and they’re back to their feet. Perez lands a right. Lapilus responds with a left. Perez attempts a spinning backfist; partially lands with his forearm. Perez gets the TD. Lapilus is looking for the kimura again. Perez passes into halfguard. Latter is elbowing Lapilus to the thigh. Now Perez passes into mount. Lapilus gets halfguard back but takes an elbow for his trouble. Horn goes. Perez likely has this.
