BJ Penn has been in the news lately, after heading to Jackson-Wink MMA and calling out Nik Lentz (again), but it wasn’t clear whether the UFC was on board with his comeback plans. Since he is one of the greatest fighters of all time, and a UFC Hall of Famer, it seemed like a no brainer that he’d be welcome. But, Dana White was calling for him to retire back in 2014.
Well, recently Penn appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and while doing so, “The Prodigy” announced the following (quote via MMA Fighting.com);
“I want to go get that 145-pound belt. That’s definitely a huge motivation for me. I believe with Greg Jackson’s help, I can get that done. And I believe that I will be able to walk away as the only man with three titles in three weight divisions.”
“I’ve been kind of thinking about it for a while. But, this is my last resort, and I’m going to give it everything I got”
Considering what Penn’s been up to recently, this news isn’t too surprising, but what does White think of his plans? Well, recently MMA Junkie.com contacted the UFC boss man, and he confirmed that Penn is coming back. White also said that Penn’s next bout has yet to be determined.
So, there you have it. It’s going to be another fascinating storyline to follow in 2016. No question. Lentz has said he doesn’t want to fight at 145 any more, so one would think that’s not a bout that’s going to materialize. Can Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn work their magic and help Penn make another title run at this stage of the game?
The 37 year-old Penn hasn’t fought since Frankie Edgar stopped him in July, 2014.
