Frankie Edgar Says Conor McGregor “Played The Safe Play”

Frankie Edgar’s calls to fight Conor McGregor weren’t answered by the UFC, but “The Answer” says he gets why the featherweight star is moving to 155 for his next bout.

McGregor has been booked to fight the lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 197 on March 5th, after bombing out Jose Aldo last month to take the 145 title. Following Edgar’s win over Chad Mendes, he drove hard for a scrap with McGregor, but obviously that didn’t play out, yet.

Recently Edgar spoke to FOX Sports about McGregor’s decision, and here is some of what he had to say:

“I think Conor played the smart move, he played the business move. You can’t blame him for that, it just sucks that it’s at my expense and now I’m in limbo since I was supposed to get that next title shot. If he stuck around and lost to me, he has no option to go up to 155. I think now he goes up, win or lose, he’s still got the belt and he can come back down to 145. He played the safe play which is smart by him…”

Edgar also said in the interview that he hasn’t be assured yet by the UFC that he’s next in line for a shot at the 145 belt, as he believes Aldo may be in the mix as well.
