There’s been a ridiculous amount of speculation that Conor McGregor will be gunning for a welterweight title shot, if he defeats Rafael dos Anjos, and clearly Demian Maia isn’t on board.
Yes, although McGregor needs to get past the lightweight champ, RDA, on March 5th, there’s been talk that the Irish star might call for a scrap with Robbie Lawler. Even McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, thinks it’s possible.
Well, recently Maia was asked for his take on the situation on “The MMA Hour”, and he said this (quotes via Bloody Elbow.com):
“That’s crazy,” Maia said. “We are athletes, and we work very hard in our way to the title. I understand that this fight would make a lot of money, but as an athlete, I don’t agree with that. I can’t disagree more. […]
“Give me that title shot if I win (against Brown),” added, in an apparent message to Dana White. “If I win that fight I wanna fight for the title. Forget about McGregor.”
Maia is booked to take on Matt Brown on May 14th. The jiu-jitsu god has won four straight.
