It looks like Matt Mitrione would like to return to the UFC, but Bellator clearly has the heavyweight thinking about moving on over…
Mitrione entered free agency not long ago, following his stoppage loss to Travis Browne in January. Recently the heavy handed fighter appeared on “The MMA Hour’, and Mitrione confirmed that Bellator has tabled him a tempting offer (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“UFC has the right to match,” Mitrione said. “Definitely, I’ve got a very nice offer from Bellator. I’m very happy with that. I’ve been in talks with ONE [Championship]. I feel I am very happy with where things are with Bellator right now.”
The 37 year-old went on to add, however, that while he’d be happy to accept Bellator’s offer, he has some matters to tend to in the UFC. Namely, a rematch with Mr. Browne, since their first encounter saw Mitrione take some nasty eye pokes.
“If the UFC matched, my first fight would be with Travis again. That’s my money fight. I want that fight. I was beating him, I’m better than him, the world knows it, the world saw it, especially if they’re calling fouls where he can’t stop my forward aggression coming forwards. Travis is going to have a really bad night and he knows it, too. The world knows it.”
So, it will be interesting to see if the UFC comes up with the cash to match Bellator’s offer. Mitrione isn’t knocking on the door for a title shot, but he’s ridiculously dangerous and people love to watch him fight.Case in point, of his nine pro wins, eight have been via TKO or KO.
It would be kind of weird to see Mitrione fighting in Bellator, since, the heavyweight has never fought professionally for another organization. That’s right. Mitrione made his pro debut in 2009 with the UFC…How many people on this planet can say that?
