UFC 109 Bonuses: Sonnen, Marquardt, Thiago, and Serra Earn $60K Awards

Chael SonnenChael Sonnen, Nate Marquardt, Paulo Thiago, and Matt Serra each earned $60,000 “fight night” bonuses for their performances on Saturday at “UFC 109: Relentless” in Las Vegas, UFC President Dana White announced at the UFC 109 post-fight press conference.

Sonnen and Marquardt squared off for the next middleweight title shot and their bout didn’t disappoint, as the co-headliners took home “Fight of the Night” honors. While Sonnen pummeled Marquardt on the ground for most of the fight, Marquardt kept things interesting by cutting Sonnen open with an elbow from the bottom before desparately working for a finish in a frantic final minute, but Sonnen would ultimately survive to earn a unanimous decision win.

Thiago earned the “Submission of the Night” after dropping Mike Swick with a counter left in the second-round, quickly securing a D’arce choke that, after Swick refused to tap, put him to sleep.

In the pay-per-view opener, Serra scored the “Knockout of the Night” over fellow-veteran Frank Trigg, dropping “Twinkle Toes” with a right before finishing him with several more powerful punches on the ground.
