The rivals are scheduled to fight in the main event of the April 23rd card, which will go down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The bout will mark the first time Jones has fought, since he decisioned Cormier last Janaury. Since then, “DC” submitted Anthony Johnson to take the 205 crown, and in October, he decisioned Alexander Gustafsson to defend it.
Well, recently Evans spoke with FOX Sports, and the former champ relayed that “for some reason”, he believes Cormier will defeat Jones. Evans argued that if Cormier can keep up a good pace, and use his wrestling more effectively, he can beat “Bones”. In addition, Evans questioned whether Jones will be at his best, following the lengthy lay off. He also stated this:
“Mentally, coming into this fight, I think (Cormier) is in a different place. I’m a huge Jon Jones fan as far as his talent and everything in the Octagon, but I just worry that Jon under this new mindset, this new Jon Jones, is he going to still be able to go out there and do the things that we’ve seen him do so easily?” Evans said. “At some point, people do start to show that they are human and things do affect them so I wonder what’s the real outcome to how he’s internalizing everything that’s happened in his personal life?”
“I do believe he’s so dynamic, but will he return as that same dynamic fighter that we’ve come to know?”
Yup. All these questions are why so many people are buzzing about the upcoming rematch. The fact it will feature the greatest light-heavyweight ever taking on the reigning champ in Cormier, doesn’t hurt either.
UFC 197 will also featured flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson taking on Henry Cejudo. Former lightweight champ Anthony Pettis is also scheduled to take on Edson Barboza. It should be a fantastic night.
