Jon Jones has a lot of fans, no question, but a key reason he’s one of the biggest names in the game, is because he has a lot of ‘detractors’ as well…
While no one can deny that “Bones” is one of the greatest fighters who’s ever lived, if not the greatest, his run-ins with the law haven’t sat well with some. In addition, some folks still hold a grudge over Jones’ decision to pull out of UFC 151, and not fight Chael Sonnen on short notice (after Dan Henderson went down with a knee injury). The event was ultimately cancelled.
Well, Jones is keenly aware that not everyone is a member of the “Bones” fan club. Thus, this is why he decided to still fight at UFC 197 after Daniel Cormier went down, and face Ovince Saint Preux. Recently, he told the media the following about his decision (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“I missed the game so much. … Over the last year, it’s been really tough to be a Jon Jones fan, for sure. I definitely haven’t made it easy. I wanted to do something positive. I wanted to save the day for these guys.”
“UFC 151 happened a long time ago,” Jones noted about the ill fated, 2012 card. “It’s something that some people still hold against me to this day. To get in there for all these fans, saving this card, I thought it would give me some brownie points with the fans.”
There’s no doubt that UFC 197 is a much, much better card with Jones – OSP in play.
Saturday’s event will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
