It looks like Conor McGregor isn’t the only fighter who’s been asking the UFC for a fight with Nate Diaz…
Recently Neil Magny appeared on “The MMA Hour”, and during the show, the welterweight contender made it clear he’s interested in facing Diaz. As this is being written, it remains to be seen what’s next for Diaz or McGregor, after their UFC 200 bout was pulled from the July 9th card.
Since Diaz is technically available for a scrap, Magny reported the following on the show (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“When I saw Conor McGregor pull out of the fight and Nate Diaz didn’t have an opponent at the time, I thought it would be a great thing for me…Why not take a fight against Nate Diaz?’ I mean, it will be a huge opportunity for me to keep relevant, give an impressive performance for the fans, and stay relevant in this sport.”
“I’m not sure if I’m going to get it or not, but I definitely put it out there. I let the UFC know that I’m definitely interested in it and I’m back in the gym training…”
Everything Magny has said here is spot on. Diaz is one of the biggest names in the sport, following his submission win over McGregor in March, so why not ask to fight him right? After all, Magny has gone 9-1 in his last 10 fights and is ranked #7 at 170.
Will it happen though? Probably not. Although Magny certainly deserves to have a bigger name as a result of his recent run, he’s likely doesn’t have the star power yet to lock up a bout with Diaz. But, you have to admire Magny for trying. Plus, you never know, by throwing his name in the hat, maybe he gets the call if an injury occurs etc?
Magny is coming off a thrilling, third round stoppage win over Hector Lombard in March.
