Cain Velasquez Ready for Title Shot, But Next Fight Hinges on Mir vs. Carwin

Cain VelasquezAfter improving to 8-0 with a first-round knockout of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on Saturday in the UFC 110 main event, Cain Velasquez appears ready for a title shot, but awaits the result of a March 27 interim title bout between fellow contenders Frank Mir and Shane Carwin at UFC 111 to find out who will get the call to face the returning champ Brock Lesnar.

If the Mir-Carwin winner emerges healthy, they’re expected to draw Lesnar first, while Velasquez will be forced to wait patiently to fight the winner or, more-likely, take on another contender in the meantime, possibly slugger Junior dos Santos should he win his March 21 matchup against Gabriel Gonzaga at “UFC on Versus: Vera vs. Jones“.

However, should the Mir-Carwin winner be sidelined, Velasquez, the winner of six-straight UFC fights including five knockouts, is expected to face Lesnar, possibly as early as July at UFC 116.
