Plenty of folks throughout the MMA world may be getting a wee bit tired about all the Conor McGregor – Floyd Mayweather talk, but the latter continues to campaign for the bout.
As you know, recently The Sun reported that a boxing match between McGregor and Mayweather was in the works, and that it could be signed shortly. MMA pundits and hardcore fans were quick to scoff at the report, since McGregor remains under contract with the UFC. Dana White was also quick to deny the story.
More recently, White has called on Mayweather to call him, while discussing the rumored bout during interviews. Of course, most people have understandably viewed White’s comments as a joke, and at best, a willingness to discuss a MMA bout, not boxing.
Well, although most people seem ready to move on from the rumor, Mayweather is still talking about boxing McGregor. In fact, recently he told ESNEWS that he’ll only end his retirement, if he’s fighting the UFC’s featherweight champ (quote via MMA Fighting.com):
“If I do fight, it’s only against Conor McGregor. That’s gonna be my only fight and not against nobody else because this matchup is just so intriguing. You have a fighter against an MMA fighter, one of the best MMA fighters to do combat and stand up and do it. He’s a strong fighter and when I look at him fight he’s a little faster than I thought he was so if the fight happens I can’t overlook the guy. I’m pretty sure – if we make the fight happen – I’m pretty sure he’s gonna push me to the limit.”
It’s kind of surprising to see the boxing star still gunning for this fight no? Does Mayweather just think this would be an easy way to move his record to 50-0 and make $100 million while doing so?
McGregor – Diaz II, meanwhile, is expected to get booked for later this summer, early fall.
