Stipe Miocic

If you were shocked to see Stipe┬áMiocic take out Fabricio Werdum in less than three minutes at UFC 198, well, Alistair Overeem is clearly on the same page…

Miocic┬álaid claim to the UFC’s heavyweight title last weekend, by cracking Werdum flush on the jaw with a right hook. Heading into the May 14th card, some folks certainly had Miocic winning the title, but due to the run Werdum’s been on, not many predicted the fight would last less than 180 seconds.

Recently Overeem appeared on Brian Stann’s Sirius show, and the heavyweight contender had this to say about the fight (quotes via MMA

“When I saw the fight I was actually flabbergasted how easily [Miocic] won. I would never have expected him to knock Fabricio out in the two-minute mark, two and a half minutes. Fairly easy. Not that many significant strikes landed before. Basically it was a right hook and then another right and that was the end of that.

“I definitely would have given Fabricio Werdum the home-field advantage. I mean, this was a soccer stadium filled with 45,000 Brazilians, it’s hostile territory for any outsider to fight there. That definitely does give the home fighter an advantage I think but Stipe just went in there and blasted his way to victory in two and a half minutes so congratulations to Stipe. An unexpected win in my book.”

The bout no doubt dropped plenty of jaws throughout the MMA world. Miocic has now finished three straight opponents and four of the last five men he’s faced.

All signs point to Miocic – Overeem going down sometime before the year is out. Although the latter has also been on an impressive run as of late, chances are people won’t be so shocked, if Miocic does score another first round stoppage. Really, one would think the chances of that fight going the distance, either way, are relatively slim.
