Most folks understand that Conor McGregor will likely never box Floyd Mayweather, and if he does, the consensus is that the latter would win easily. But, does renowned boxing coach Freddie Roach share this opinion? Has Mayweather made a ridiculous amount of money during this career?
Recently Roach appeared on Inside MMA , and during the segment, he reported that Mayweather recently reached out and encouraged him to coach McGregor. Since, according to Mayweather, the bout is going to happen…
Roach was, of course, asked for his take on the unlikely fight, and here is some of what he had to say (quote via Bloody Elbow.com):
“I told Mayweather, it would take me three years at least to get him ready to fight you,” Roach said. “I don’t think it’s really possible for a MMA fighter to fight a boxer. I don’t think it’s really fair. Mayweather would out box him all day long. I mean Conor McGregor seems like a tough guy and all that, but being a tough guy doesn’t really help you in boxing.”
“Mayweather is the best boxer in the world and he would not even lose a round against a guy with Conor’s experience,” added Roach. “He looks like an okay boxer. He’s a very good MMA fighter, but this is boxing. He’s kind of a beginner at boxing.”
Yup. When you consider that Mayweather is one of the greatest boxers of all time, it’s extremely difficult to imagine a bout with McGregor being competitive. Maybe they should meet half way? How about a kickboxing match?
While this rumor has made for some interesting gossip and debate, the reality is that McGregor will likely be facing Nate Diaz next. A guy who’s not too shabby himself when it comes to boxing…The UFC is reportedly hoping to book that fight for UFC 202 in August.
