A matchup between top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko and fellow contender Fabricio Werdum, previously expected for April, is now scheduled to take place in May, Emelianenko’s manager, Vadim Finkelstein, today announced at an M-1 Selection press conference in St. Petersburg, Russia, according to TV 100.
Strikeforce was believed to be planning it’s second CBS-televised event for April that would feature Emelianenko vs. Werdum as well as middleweight champ Jake Shields vs. Dan Henderson.
Shields confirmed yesterday that he’d agreed to fight Henderson in April, rumored for the 17th in Nashville, Tennessee, and expected the card to air on CBS, but said negotiations were ongiong. Now, however, it appears likely that Shields-Henderson could be shifted to Showtime (or even postponed until May) and Emelianenko-Werdum would headline the promotion’s return to CBS.
Emelianenko (31-1) defeated Brett Rogers in November in his Strikeforce debut on CBS for his 27th-straight win, while Werdum (13-4-1) has won back-to-back Strikeforce fights over Mike Kyle and Antonio Silva after being cut by the UFC in 2008.
Strikeforce has not commented on their upcoming schedule, but an announcement is expected soon.
