In recent weeks, Stephen Thompson repeatedly argued that he, and not Tyron Woodley, should challenge for the welterweight title next. In addition, the vaunted striker has predicted Robbie Lawler will defeat the contender. Well, comments like that, from Thompson and others, seem to have ‘agitated’ Mr. Woodley.
Woodley was promised a title shot last October, after his bout with Johny Hendricks fell apart, when the latter withdrew due to weight cutting issues. Since then, however, Carlos Condit battled Lawler to a razor thin, decision loss. Thompson has defeated Hendricks and Rory Thompson.
As we know, the UFC elected to honor their promise to Woodley, and he’ll scrap Lawler tomorrow at UFC 201. While taking to MMA Fighting.com’s Ariel Helwani recently, Woodley directed this comment to Thompson and others (quote via MMA Mania.com):
“The welterwhiners, there’s actually a few of them in here, they’re annoying,” Woodley said. “Everybody has counted me out in this fight. You got ‘Wonder Woman,’ already talking about a match up between him and Robbie would be a great fight. What’s gonna happen is, I’m gonna win this fight.”
There you have it. Really, it’s not surprising to hear this. Woodley has taken a lot of heat and criticism in recent months, so he’s understandably eager to prove the doubters wrong.
The 34 year-old vet is coming off wins over Kelvin Gastelum and Dong Hyun Kim, after he was decisioned by Rory MacDonald in 2014.
