Stephen Thompson’s Upset by Tyron Woodley’s Money Fight Plans

Stephen Thompson

Since Tyron Woodley bombed out Robbie Lawler at UFC 201, the new champ’s called for fights with Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre, and Stephen Thompson isn’t too happy about it.

After Thompson took out Johny Hendricks earlier this year, the highlight reel striker started campaigning for a scrap with Lawler. While doing so, he argued that he deserved a title shot more than Woodley. Then, once it was announced the latter would challenge for the belt next, Thompson predicted Lawler would defend the title.

Well, since Woodley put away Lawler, he’s said he wants money fights with Diaz or GSP, and that Thompson can wait. “Wonderboy” appeared on the latest “MMA Hour” on Monday, and here is some of what he had to say about Woodley’s recent comments (quote via MMA

“In my head I was like, ‘You are kidding me, right?’ Yeah, he went out there and he defeated Robbie Lawler, but he took this fight and a lot of people didn’t think he deserved it in the first place, but seconds after winning the title he’s already choosing his fights? I mean come on, who gets that? Who really gets to do that? You are starting to see that a lot more. It’s almost like do the rankings really count? I was upset he said that because he knows I’m the number one guy, he knows I’ve been working hard and I’m on a seven-fight win streak. I think you have to defend the title at least once before you can start picking your shots. I’m not saying he’s scared of me, but he just doesn’t want to fight me. He doesn’t want to step in the ring and I don’t know if he thinks it’s a bad match up…”

Thompson could end up getting his wish. One would think that the UFC won’t be handing Diaz a title shot, as although he’s a huge draw, the Stockton fighter hasn’t won in three straight bouts. Now, GSP has said he’s interested in fighting Woodley, so the UFC will likely take a long look at that. But, the former champ has yet to reach a new deal with the promotion.

It will be interesting to see what comes next. It’s worth noting that Demian Maia fights Carlos Condit on August 20th, and the winner of that bout will be in the mix as well.
