UFC FN 92: Prelims Play-by-Play & Results

UFC Fight Night 92 is underway in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the prelims will feature several intriguing match-ups, including Cub Swanson vs. Tatsuya Kawajiri.

In tonight’s headliner, Yair Rodriguez will battle featherweight vet, Alex Caceres.

Let’s jump to the action.

Justin Ledet def.  Chase Sherman via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Cub Swanson 

Round 1: Kawajiri comes out firing leg kicks. Spinning back fist from Kawajiri misses. Big right from Swanson. Another right from Swanson but it misses – might have taken a left counter. Kawajiri eats another right. Shot from Kawajiri but it’s stuffed. Swanson sticks the jab. Latter misses with a spinning kick. Kawajiri cracks Swanson with a nice right. Kawajiri shoots again and gets it. Kawajiri passes into mount. Very impressive. Swanson re-establishes guard. Round ends.

Round 2: Swanson plants a right. And another. Kawajiri shoots in but Swanson defends. Kawajiri continues to fire the odd leg kick. Kawajiri goes high with a kick but its blocked. Takedown from Kawajiri but Swanson reverses. Wow. Swanson is looking for the rear-naked-choke. Looks like he’s got it. Wow. Kawajiri gets out. Swanson lets him up. Kawajiri spins with an elbow and Swanson counters with an uppercut. Nice combo from Swanson. In the scramble, Swanson kneed Kawajiri to the head, who was down. “Big John McCarthy stops the action. Yup. Replay shows Kawajiri ate that knee straight to the head. Clear foul. No point deducted. Fight resumes. Swanson is chucking big shots. Kawajiri returns fire. Great action. Kawajiri shoots in on a single but can’t get it. Hard leg kick from Swanson that momentarily puts Kawajiri down. Round ends.

Round 3: It’s likely one round a piece. Swanson fires in a hard jab. Latter plants a right. Kawajiri shoots in, sticks with it, and gets the TD. Swanson pops back to his feet but Kawajiri is looking for another takedown. Another TD by Kawajiri. Swanson spins and gets back to his feet. Beautifully done. Kawajiri just misses with a spinning elbow. Swanson fires in a big kick and then lands a knee to the body. Kawajiri is down on the mat and is looking for a heelhook. Swanson lands some punches from above. What a fight. Now Swanson has Kawajiri’s back along the cage. Wow. Kawajiri reverses but then Swanson does too. Crazy. Final horn goes. Very competitive bout.

Horacio Gutierrez vs. Teruto Ishihara

Round 1: Ishihara with a body kick. An exchange of hard leg licks. Ishihara runs in looking for a TD but Gutierrez defends. Ishihara digs a left to the body. Wow. They wing big punches and then high five each other. Wow. Ishihara floors Gutierrez with a huge left as he runs in. Gutierrez is trying to get back up and Ishihara decks him again. That’s a wrap. Ishihara looked at ref before landing finishing punch, apparently knowing Gutierrez wasn’t there. Big win for Ishihara.

Jason Novelli vs. David Teymur

Round 1: Teymur with a leg kick. And another one. Teymur goes high with a kick but it’s blocked. Novelli counters a body kick with a right. Novelli clinches up. Teymur is cut under the left eye. Teymur is staying busy with kicks. Novelli fires in a kick to the body. Novelli cracks Teymur with a nice knee to the chin. Teymur cracks Novelli with a big left and he goes down briefly. Teymur continues to land more during the striking exchanges. Round ends.

Round 2: Both men fire off kicks. Novelli clinches up. Teymur cracks Novelli with a massive lef. Novelli gets up but is bombed back down and it’s all over. Novelli protests the stoppage but he took a couple of huge shots.

David Teymur def. Jason Novelli via TKO (punches) R2, 1:25

Viktor Pesta vs. Marcin Tybura 

Round 1: Tybura moves in and fires off a big right. Another big right from Tybura just misses. Pesta comes in but Tybura counters with a big right. Tybura lands a left. Another right from Tybura. Pesta shoots in but Tybura defends. Nice uppercut from Pesta. Tybura flurries in and plants a right. Nice right from Tybura. Headkick attempt from Tybura. Huge overhand right from Tybura misses. Pesta with a combo. Counter left from Pesta lands. Tybura sticks a hard jab. Pesta clinches up and is looking for a TD. Round ends.

Round 2: Pesta wings a big left hook that misses. Wow. Tybura blasts Pesta with a left, head kick and he goes down in a heap. That was nasty. That KO is going to make a ton of highlight reels…

Court McGee vs. Dominique Steele

Round 1: Wow. McGee cracks Steele with a right hand right away that wobbles him. McGee takes him down and has his back. McGee is looking for the RNC but is cranking the neck at the sametime. Steele defends and gets back to his feet. Wow. Steele cranks McGee with a big right. McGee eats another shot and he goes for a TD. More action along the cage. Round ends.

Round 2: Steele with a nice hook. Steele is finding the mark more often. McGee pushes Steele to the cage. Latter defends the TD. They trade shots in the center of the cage. McGgee gets the TD but Steele gets right back up. McGee has Steele up agains the fence but Steele is defending the TD. They exchange elbows. Round ends.

Round 3: McGee goes high with a kick that’s blocked. Steele digs in a left hook.  Steele plants a nice left hand. Latter charges in and lands a nice uppercut. McGee pushes Steele to the fence.  McGee gets the TD but Steele pops right back up. Ref breaks them up. Steele shoots in but McGee defends. They battle along the fence. Final horn goes. Close fight.
