After being passed by Frankie Edgar for the next title shot against lightweight champion BJ Penn, 155-pound contender Gray Maynard wants to face the winner of the upcoming matchup between Kenny Florian and Takanori Gomi in his next bout.
A semifinalist on The Ultimate Fighter 5, Maynard has reeled off seven-straight victories since mid-2007, but six-straight decisions, including back-to-back split decision wins over Roger Huerta and Nate Diaz in his most-recent fights, have left the UFC hesitant to book him for an opportunity at the title.
Despite his lack of finishing ability, Maynard remains near the top of the division and stands out, along with Edgar, as one of the few fighters who has yet to face Penn.
The winner of a potential matchup between Maynard and the Florian-Gomi winner would almost surely get the next shot at the title against the winner of the April 10 meeting between Penn and Edgar, which co-headlines UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi.
