Weidman’s reign as champion came to an end last December, when Rockhold took him out in the fourth round. The two were booked to fight again this past June at UFC 199, but a neck injury forced Weidman to withdraw. Bisping proceeded to drop jaws around the world, by KO’ing Rockhold in the opening round.
Well, immediately following UFC 199, it wasn’t clear what the promotions plans were in terms of who Bisping would face next. But, more recently, it was announced that the British star will rematch Henderson, October 8th at UFC 204. Weidman appeared on the latest “MMA Hour“, and during the interview, the decorated wrestler said the following (quote via MMA Mania.com):
“I haven’t heard a word. I have reached out, but I don’t know what’s going to happen. I would like to have the biggest fight I could possibly have at Madison Square Garden. It’s always been my dream to fight as MSG. I’d like a fight that everybody is getting excited about, a fight everyone wants to see. I don’t know who gives that to me. I think redemption against Luke Rockhold would probably be the biggest in my eyes. So I think that’s the fight I want. You have ‘Jacare,’ Yoel Romero, and then you have some of the old timers with the big names, Anderson Silva and other guys like that. I don’t know who it’s going to be, honestly. I’m going to put it in UFC’s hands. Whoever they decide to give me they will give me, but, if I had to pick it would be Luke. I think we are the two best in the division and I would like to fight the best guy, especially a guy who beat me. I want to get that one back, especially in front of a home crowd in MSG. That would be a great one.”
Sounds like a plan no? Not everyone was on board when the UFC booked the immediate rematch this past June, but considering everything that’s gone down since, Rockhold – Weidman II at UFC 205 makes sense. Although, as Weidman noted, “Jacare” and Romero are also in the mix.
