Bellator middleweight champion Hector Lombard will likely fight former WEC champ Paulo Filho at Bellator’s May 20 event, according to Tatame, while a previously-announced “super fight” between lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez and UFC veteran Josh Neer is slated for the promotion’s May 6 card, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney recently announced.
Both bouts will be non-title, as Bellator’s champions, who won the belts by winning the promotion’s season one tournaments, await the winners of the upcoming second season tourneys for their first title defenses during Bellator’s third season later this year.
Since winning the title last June with a fourth-round TKO of Jared Hess, Lombard (25-2-1) has gone 3-0, including a first-round TKO of Art Santore on Friday in Australia to successfully defend his CFC belt. Despite being plagued by personal problems since losing to Chael Sonnen in November 2008 in his final WEC bout, Filho has won three-straight over Melvin Manhoef, Alex Schoenauer, and, most-recently in December, Tatsuhiko Nishizaka.
Alvarez (19-2), who underwent surgery in January, claimed the title with a second-round submission of Toby Imada last June before defeating Katsunori Kikuno in his most-recent fight in DREAM in October. Neer (27-9-1) was released by the UFC in October following back-to-back losses, but has since won two-straight bouts via first-round stoppage in January and February.
