The consensus has been that if Jon Jones is cleared to fight again, sooner than later, then he’ll be booked to face Daniel Cormier. But, following Anthony Johnson’s vicious KO win over Glover Teixeira on Saturday, Dana White’s has another idea.
Jones was scheduled to rematch Cormier at UFC 200, but after being flagged by USADA, the championship bout was cancelled. More recently, however, Jones reported that he’s received some “good news” and that he expects to be back fighting soon.
“I’m in a weird place,” White said. “We saw that fight, and it was a great fight. I’ve still got to talk to (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva and see what he thinks. But I’m thinking maybe we do Anthony Johnson vs. Jon Jones to see who gets to fight Daniel Cormier.”
That’s a fight a lot of folks would love to see. As you may recall, Johnson and Jones were supposed to fight last spring, but the latter was arrested on hit-and-run charges, and the bout was canned. Cormier proceeded to tap-out Johson to become the 205 champ.
The question is, however, does Cormier want to remain on the sidelines for that long? Although, Jones – Johnson would make “DC’s” next title defense that much bigger right?
After Jones was pulled from UFC 200, Anderson Silva agreed to step-up on short notice and Cormier won via UD.
