On September 10th, not only will Punk, or Phil Brooks, make his UFC debut, he’ll be fighting for the very first time…In fact, the former pro-wrestling star only really started training in all aspects of MMA, on a regular basis, in late 2014. As a result, a lot of fans, pundits and observers think Punk is going to get steamrolled by his opponent Mickey Gall, who has several amateur and pro bouts under his belt.
Well, recently Overeem attended a media session in advance of his UFC 203 headliner with heavyweight champ, Stipe Miocic. When asked to weigh-in on Punk’s debut, “The Reem” said the following (quote via FOX Sports):
“I totally understand and realize you need to have these ‘show’ fights to kind of boost the sport,” Overeem said. “Brock (Lesnar) came from the WWE, I think it was great for the sport, he’s a big guy, I enjoyed watching his fights. So the same for CM Punk…
“To me he’s making a mistake. He doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into. He’s talking about ‘I want to test myself’ and this and that — well, he’s going to be tested.”
There you have it. Now to be fair, others have cited Punk’s athletic abilities and work ethic, as to why he could shock the combat sports world on September 10th. He’s certainly been training out of one of the best camps in the game, at Roufusport in Milwaukee. We shall see what happens soon enough.
UFC 203 will take place in Cleveland, Ohio.
