Stipe Miocic seems to be making the rounds a bit more since he became the UFC’s heavyweight champ, and Alistair Overeem is questioning whether the heavy handed fighter is focused on their UFC 203 scrap.
Miocic bombed out Fabricio Werdum in May to grab UFC gold, and since then, it certainly looks like he’s been attending more events. Well, recently Overeem talked to Champions.co about his upcoming bout with Miocic, and “The Reem” relayed this (quote via MMA Junkie.com):
“It’s all about whether he can stay focused,” Overeem said. “If you’re doing the appearances and the pool parties – because yes, we have seen Stipe at several of them. Not one, but several.
“He’s enjoying the life, and that’s not a bad thing. But know somebody’s coming and somebody’s going to take that belt, and he’s not going to enjoy life.”
Now, of course, just because Miocic has been attending more events these days, doesn’t mean he’s not training ridiculously hard for his first title defense. It’s hard to imagine that Miocic would look past Overeem, or let the distractions that come with being champion get to him, so early on in his reign. Overeem could also be saying this as a means to get in Miocic’s head.
All this aside, it will be interesting to see what unfolds in this bout. Both men are noted finishers, so one would think this fight won’t go five rounds, but ya never know.
UFC 203 will go down on September 10th in Cleveland, Ohio, which is Miocic’s hometown.
