Duane “Bang” Ludwig suffered a broken ankle on Sunday in a loss to newcomer Darren Elkins at UFC on Versus 1, while headliner Brandon Vera sustained three facial fractures thanks to a crushing elbow by Jon Jones in the main event on the UFC’s Versus debut in Broomfield, Colorado.
Early in the opening round of their preliminary matchup, Elkins secured a takedown, but Ludwig’s foot got trapped beneath himself and his ankle immediately snapped, forcing the fight to be stopped after just 44-seconds. Speculation ranged from a dislocation to a broken leg, but Ludwig ultimately determined to have suffered a “severe” broken ankle that is expected to require surgery, according to MMA Weekly.
Vera was tagged by a sweeping elbow directly to his eye socket midway through the opening round of the headliner, which forced him to cover up and allowed Jones to finish him off for a TKO victory. By the time the result was announced, Vera’s eye had swollen shut and Jeremy Botter has since reported that he suffered “three broken facial bones.”
