Hours after learning that original opponent Thiago Alves would be unable to fight as scheduled at Saturday’s UFC 111, welterweight contender Jon Fitch is back on the card, replacing Jake Ellenberger against Ben Saunders on the UFC 111 pay-per-view in Newark, New Jersey.
Alves was forced to withdraw from the anticipated rematch this morning after failing a CT scan, and Fitch was officially scratched from the card
However, according to MMAjunkie, Saunders since requested a fight with Fitch and the UFC approved the last-minute change. Ellenberger has reportedly been promised both his fight purse and win bonus for the late scratch.
Because Saunders was already slated for the main card, a lightweight matchup between Kurt Pellegrino and Fabricio Camoes, which replaced Fitch-Alves earlier today, will also remain on the pay-per-view.
A cast member on The Ultimate Fighter 6, Saunders (8-1-2) suffered his first loss to Mike Swick last June, but rebounded in November with a first-round knockout of Marcus Davis.
Fitch (21-3) had his then-UFC record eight-fight win streak snapped in an August 2008 loss to welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre, but has since rebounded with three-straight wins.
