Thiago Alves Targeting UFC 114 Return Following Successful Surgery

Thiago AlvesUFC welterweight contender Thiago Alves underwent successful surgery on Wednesday to separate an artery from a vain in his brain, an “irregularity” which was detected last week in a pre-fight CT scan that forced him out of his rematch with Jon Fitch at UFC 111 on March 27 in Newark, New Jersey.

Alves is expected to be able to resume training in weeks and said Friday that he’s targeting UFC 114 on May 29 in Las Vegas and will come back “stronger than ever.”

Alves (16-6) had won seven-straight, including knockouts of Karo Parisyan and Matt Hughes as well as a decision over Josh Koscheck, before dropping a unanimous decision to welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre in his most-recent fight last July at UFC 100.

An opponent has yet to be determined for his next fight.
