Tyron Woodley has become much, much more than just a highly skilled wrestler during his MMA career, but it sounds like the champ plans to use all of his skills against Stephen Thompson.
Woodley will face the dangerous striker at UFC 205 on Saturday night in New York City. The fight will mark the first time “The Chosen One” has fought, since Woodley KO’d Robbie Lawler in July to become the welterweight champ. Heading into the bout, Woodley is actually the betting odds, underdog, even though he is the current, 170 king.
On the most recent “UFC Tonight“, Woodley was asked what his gameplan is for Thompson, and the champ said this (quote via FOX Sports 1 press release):
“[To Michael Bisping, who was also on the show] I know you have the same manager. I can’t tell you too much. I’m going to be a complete mixed martial artist. I can wrestle, I can grapple, and I have knockout power. I’m good at not letting anyone make good at me.”
It’s going to be fascinating to see how this fight plays out. Woodley definitely isn’t short on power, but will he look to take Thompson down? And in doing so, negate the decorated striker’s kicking game? Woodley hasn’t really put his wrestling game into play very much during his UFC run.
UFC 205 will be hosted by Madison Square Garden.
